Where to stay

Recommended areas and tips

Here is where you should (and definitely should not) drop your suitcase in the Eternal City.

1️⃣ Centro Storico (Pantheon / Piazza Navona)

📍 Location: The baroque heart of the city, between Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and Campo de' Fiori.

✅ Pros:

  • ✔️ You are literally inside the postcard – step out of your hotel and you are surrounded by monuments.
  • ✔️ You can walk to almost everything, often without using public transport.
  • ✔️ Magical atmosphere, especially early in the morning.

❌ Cons:

  • ⚠️ Prices that would shock even a Roman emperor.
  • ⚠️ Constant noise and very little peace and quiet.
  • ⚠️ The famous "sanpietrini" cobblestones are beautiful, but tough on suitcase wheels.

💰 Prices: 🏨 Hotels from around €200–€500 per night, B&Bs from about €120 per night.

👉 Best for: First-time visitors who want the full "Dolce Vita" experience and do not mind paying for the location.

2️⃣ Trastevere

📍 Location: Across the River Tiber, just south of the Vatican area.

"This is where Rome can feel like a medieval village – with very good food."

✅ Pros:

  • ✔️ One of the most romantic and bohemian districts, with ivy-covered alleyways and warm ochre façades.
  • ✔️ Excellent nightlife and food scene, with lots of trattorias and small bars.
  • ✔️ Lively, authentic Roman feel (even if it is increasingly popular with visitors).

❌ Cons:

  • ⚠️ No metro: You mostly rely on trams, buses or walking.
  • ⚠️ Noise from bars can be intense at weekends – choose a quieter side street if you are a light sleeper.

💰 Prices: 🏨 B&Bs and flats from roughly €100–€200 per night.

👉 Best for: Food lovers, couples and late-night explorers.

3️⃣ Monti

📍 Location: Just beside the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

This is Rome’s "cool" and slightly hipster neighbourhood.

✅ Pros:

  • ✔️ Strategic position: about 5 minutes’ walk from the Colosseum and close to Metro line B.
  • ✔️ Vintage shops, small markets and plenty of characterful cafés.
  • ✔️ Less chaotic than the very centre, but still full of local life.

❌ Cons:

  • ⚠️ Hilly streets – expect slopes and steps.
  • ⚠️ Prices have risen in recent years due to its popularity.

💰 Prices: 🏨 Boutique hotels from about €150 per night.

👉 Best for: Young travellers, vintage fans and anyone who wants to see the Colosseum every morning.

4️⃣ Prati (Vatican Area)

📍 Location: North of the Vatican, near Castel Sant'Angelo.

✅ Pros:

  • ✔️ Elegant, clean and with unusually wide streets for Rome.
  • ✔️ Excellent access to Metro line A (for the Spanish Steps and Termini).
  • ✔️ Generally safe and quiet, good if you really want to rest at night.

❌ Cons:

  • ⚠️ Evenings can feel very quiet, with less nightlife than in Trastevere or the centre.
  • ⚠️ It is on the "other" side of the river – walking to the Colosseum is a long stroll.

💰 Prices: 🏨 Classic and family-run hotels from around €90–€180 per night.

👉 Best for: Families, travellers who value calm areas and fans of shopping (Via Cola di Rienzo is nearby).

🚨 Areas to Avoid or Approach With Caution

  • Around Termini (Via Marsala / Via Giolitti side): Busy and practical in the daytime, but the atmosphere can feel uncomfortable at night. Not usually dangerous, but not the nicest place for an evening walk.
  • Deeper Esquilino at night: Great for multicultural food, but some back streets can feel unsafe after dark.
  • Far-out suburbs: Rome is huge. Do not stay outside the "Grande Raccordo Anulare" ring road just to save money – you will spend a lot of time waiting for infrequent buses.
