10+ Key Tips for Visiting Amsterdam: Save Money and Enjoy Like a Pro! ✨

1️⃣ Book EVERYTHING important (way) in advance 💻

     This is not a joke: Anne Frank House (months ahead), Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum... Buy your tickets online with a date and time, or you won't get in! This also applies to accommodation and flights if you're looking for good prices. 

2️⃣ Consider the I Amsterdam City Card 💳

     Are you planning to visit a lot of museums and use public transport? This card could be your best friend.   

🔸 Includes unlimited GVB transport (tram, bus, metro).
🔸 Free entry to many museums (Rijksmuseum, NEMO, Moco, etc.) and attractions.
🔸 Includes one canal cruise.
🔸 Discounts at other places and restaurants.
🔸 Prices: From €60 (24h) to €125 (120h).

📌 Do the math: Add up the cost of the tickets and transport you plan to use. If it's more than the price of the card, it's worth it! It does not include the Anne Frank House or the Van Gogh Museum (though it might offer a discount if you book with it during certain periods, be sure to check!).

3️⃣ Watch Out for Bikes! (Yes, again) 🚲

     It sounds like an exaggeration, but they are public enemy #1 for the clueless tourist! NEVER walk in the bike lane (the red path). Always look both ways before crossing. They ride at full speed! 

4️⃣ Transport: GVB Passes or OVpay 🚆

If you don't get the I Amsterdam Card, to get around by tram/bus/metro:

✔ GVB passes for 1 to 7 days: The most convenient option if you'll use it a lot.
✔ OVpay (contactless): Pay directly with your card/phone at the reader. Convenient for a few trips.
✔ Always remember to check in AND check out! If you don't, you could be overcharged or fined.

5️⃣ Eat Smart (and Cheap) 🍟🧀

Eating at touristy restaurants can empty your wallet. Explore your options!

✔ Markets: Albert Cuyp Market or Foodhallen have delicious and well-priced food stalls.
✔ Supermarkets: Albert Heijn (AH), Jumbo... have salads, sandwiches, fruit... Perfect for a picnic in Vondelpark!
✔ 'Broodjeswinkel': Shops selling Dutch sandwiches (broodjes), cheap and tasty.
✔ Local Snacks: Try raw herring (haring), fries with mayonnaise (patatje oorlog), croquettes (kroketten) from a vending machine, and stroopwafels!

6️⃣ Tap Water = Free and Good💧

     Don't waste money on bottled water! The tap water in Amsterdam is of excellent quality. Bring a reusable bottle and refill it. 

7️⃣ Free Tours and Free (or almost free) Museums 🏛️

Take advantage of free resources:

✔ Free Tours: Great for a first overview (remember to tip).
✔ Ferry to Amsterdam Noord: Free! And the views are cool.
✔ NEMO Rooftop Terrace: Panoramic views for free.
✔ City Archives (Stadsarchief): An impressive building with free exhibitions on the ground floor.
✔ Begijnhof: A hidden and peaceful medieval courtyard (free entry, please be quiet).

8️⃣ Know the Difference Between a 'Coffee Shop' and a 'Koffiehuis' ☕🌿

     Important: A 'Coffee Shop' is where cannabis is legally sold and consumed. A 'Koffiehuis' or 'Café' is a normal cafe for coffee, tea, and pastries. Don't get them mixed up if you're just looking for caffeine! 😉   

9️⃣ Beware of Pickpockets and Scams 🎒

As in any tourist city:

✔ Watch your belongings in crowded areas (Central Station, Dam Square, markets, public transport).
✔ Wear your backpack on your front in large crowds.
✔ Don't leave your phone/wallet on the table at outdoor cafes.
❌ Be wary of street games (shell games) or people offering you 'great deals'.

🔟 Be Respectful in the Red Light District ❤️

     If you visit De Wallen: DO NOT take photos of the workers. It's illegal and a huge sign of disrespect. Walk through respectfully and without causing a scene.
