🚫 Read This Before You Book

New York has some specific rules that can seriously affect your stay if you do not know them.

  • 🛑 Be careful with Airbnb: In New York City it is illegal to rent an entire flat for fewer than 30 days (unless the owner is living there with you). Authorities cancel illegal bookings every day. For peace of mind, book a hotel.
  • 💸 Hidden "Resort Fees": Many hotels charge a mandatory "destination" or "resort" fee of around $30–$50 USD per night that does not appear in the initial price on booking sites. It is added at check-in. Always read the small print.

1️⃣ Midtown / Times Square

📍 Location: The classic central area – bright lights, skyscrapers and theatres everywhere.

✅ Pros:

  • You are right in the middle of everything. The moment you step outside, it feels like a film set.
  • Excellent transport links: many subway lines cross this area.

❌ Cons:

  • Constant noise and light, 24/7 – bring an eye mask and earplugs.
  • Many restaurants are overpriced and very touristy.

💰 Price: $$$$ (Very high)

👉 Best for: First-time visitors who want the full-on New York energy.

2️⃣ Long Island City (Queens) – The Smart Choice 🧠

📍 Location: Just across the East River, facing the UN and Midtown.

✅ Pros:

  • Great value: Many modern hotels at roughly half the price of Manhattan.
  • Fast connections: Only 1–2 subway stops from Times Square on some lines (around 15 minutes).
  • Some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline are from this area.

❌ Cons:

  • Psychologically, it may feel like "you are not really in Manhattan".
  • A few streets are quite industrial and not very pretty at night, even if they are generally safe.

💰 Price: $$ (Moderate)

👉 Best for: Practical travellers who prefer to spend more on food, shopping and experiences.

3️⃣ SoHo / West Village

📍 Location: Lower Manhattan, with cobbled streets and low-rise buildings.

✅ Pros:

  • Romantic, film-like atmosphere with boutiques and some of the city’s best restaurants.
  • Much calmer and more stylish than the Times Square area.

❌ Cons:

  • Hotel prices are very high.
  • Many older buildings do not have lifts, so you may need to carry luggage up narrow stairs.

💰 Price: $$$$$ (Luxury)

👉 Best for: Couples, fashion lovers and higher budgets.

4️⃣ Williamsburg (Brooklyn)

📍 Location: Trendy Brooklyn, one stop from Manhattan on the L train.

✅ Pros:

  • Lively area with vintage markets, street art and independent breweries.
  • Great nightlife and fantastic sunset views over the skyline.

❌ Cons:

  • Very busy at weekends.
  • The L train can get crowded at peak times.

💰 Price: $$$ (High)

👉 Best for: Young travellers (and the young at heart), creative visitors and foodies.

🚨 Areas to Avoid (Safety First)

New York City is generally safe, but if you do not know the city well, it is better not to book accommodation in these areas.

  • East New York and Brownsville (Brooklyn): Higher crime statistics and far from tourist sights.
  • South Bronx: Some parts have improved, but certain streets can feel unsafe at night.
  • Around Penn Station / Port Authority very late at night: Not usually dangerous, but there can be many homeless people and the overall atmosphere may feel uncomfortable.
