When to visit

Best time, weather and events

In this guide you will learn:

  • 🌡️ Why summer can smell bad (literally).
  • 💸 The price trap in September.
  • 🎄 What to expect from Christmas in New York.
  • 📉 When to travel to pay less and avoid long queues.

🌡️ Weather: Prepare for Extremes

New York is not famous for mild weather. You are often either freezing or melting.

Season Temp. What It Feels Like
Winter (Jan–Mar) -5 to 5°C Cold that stings your face. Snow is likely ❄️.
Spring (Apr–May) 10 to 20°C Often the best time. Blossom in the parks and very pleasant weather 🌸.
Summer (Jun–Aug) 25 to 35°C Heavy humidity – it feels like a giant oven.
⚠️ Note: Rubbish bags on the streets can ferment in the heat and smell unpleasant. 🗑️🔥
Autumn (Sep–Nov) 10 to 20°C Beautiful. Central Park turns orange and the days are cool and crisp 🍂.

💰 Prices and Crowds: Timing Matters

📉 Low Season (For Saving Money)

January, February and early March.

  • This is usually the cheapest time of the year, with hotel prices dropping significantly.
  • Fewer people: You can walk through Times Square without constantly bumping into others.
  • The downside: It is very cold and it gets dark around 4:30 PM.

📈 High Season (Expect Higher Prices)

Summer, December… and especially SEPTEMBER.

⚠️ The September Trap: Many travellers choose September for the mild weather, but it coincides with Fashion Week and the UN General Assembly, so hotel prices can easily reach $400+ per night.[web:39]

🎄 Christmas in New York

New York in December feels like a film set, but it also has a few downsides.

  • The good: Dyker Heights lights, the Rockefeller Center tree and the 5th Avenue window displays are all spectacular ✨.
  • The bad: It is one of the most expensive and busiest times of the year, and pavements get very crowded.
  • Tip: Book your hotel around six months in advance or you will pay a premium.

🎉 Events Not to Miss

  • 🎆 4 July (summer): Macy’s fireworks over the river. Impressive, but arrive several hours early to find a good spot.
  • 🎾 US Open (Aug–Sep): Major tennis tournament in Queens with a great atmosphere.
  • 🦃 Thanksgiving (November): Macy’s giant balloon parade – a true US classic.
  • 🌇 Manhattanhenge (May/Jul): The sun aligns with the Manhattan street grid, creating amazing sunset views.
  • 🌸 Cherry Blossom (April): Particularly beautiful at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

🏆 Quick Summary: When Should You Go?

Your Main Priority Best Time to Visit
Low budget 💰 January – February
Comfortable walking weather ☀️ May – June / October
