Flights, trains and ways to arrive
Rome has two main airports. ✈️ Here is how to reach the city centre from Fiumicino and Ciampino without getting lost in the Roman chaos.
✈️ 1. Fiumicino Airport (FCO)
The main international airport. It is well connected, but choosing the wrong train can mean paying much more than you need to.
- FAST option (Leonardo Express): Non-stop train to Termini station. The journey takes about 32 minutes and trains leave every 15 minutes. This is the premium choice and costs around €14.
- STRATEGIC option (Regional train FL1): This train does not go to Termini, but stops at key stations like Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina. If you are staying in Trastevere or Testaccio, this is ideal. Ticket price is about €8.
- BUDGET option (Airport shuttle buses): Several companies (SIT, Terravision, T.A.M.) run coaches to Termini (and sometimes to the Vatican area). The ride takes roughly 50–60 minutes depending on traffic and costs around €6–€7.
🚕 Be careful with taxis.
There is a fixed official fare of €50 between Fiumicino and anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls (the central historic area).[web:48][web:49][web:52]
👉 If the driver tries to use the meter or add extra fees "for luggage", remind them of the fixed fare ("Tariffa fissa").

✈️ 2. Ciampino Airport (CIA)
Smaller and closer to the city, mainly used by low-cost airlines. There is no train station directly at the terminal, but there are easy combinations.
- CLASSIC option (Shuttle bus): Direct buses to Termini (SIT, Terravision). Very simple, but subject to Rome’s traffic. Expect about 45–60 minutes. Price is usually around €6.
- "COMBO" option (Ciampino Airlink): A short shuttle bus connects the airport with Ciampino train station (about 10 minutes), where you then take a regional train to Termini (around 15 minutes). This avoids most of the traffic entering the city and costs about €2.70 for a combined ticket.
🚕 Taxis from Ciampino:
The fixed official fare is around €31 to destinations inside the Aurelian Walls.[web:49][web:50]
⚠️ Ignore unlicensed drivers calling "Taxi" inside the terminal. Always go to the official taxi rank outside.

Final tip: If you are travelling with a paper train ticket, remember to stamp it in the small validation machines before boarding. In Italy, fines for unvalidated tickets are real – and not cheap.[web:54][web:57]
