☀️ Seasons and Weather

Rome enjoys pleasant weather for much of the year, but summers can be very hot and winters surprisingly damp.

Season Average Temp. What It Feels Like
Winter (Dec–Feb) 3–13°C Cool and often wet ☔ (snow is rare).
Spring (Mar–May) 10–23°C Almost perfect 🌸 – sunny days and fresh evenings.
Summer (Jun–Aug) 20–32°C+ Intense, sometimes humid heat 🔥 (locals call it "afa").
Autumn (Sep–Nov) 12–23°C Mild, but October and November can be quite rainy 🍂.

📅 Best Time to Go

✅ Great moments to visit:

  • 🌷 Spring (April–May): The city is in bloom (do not miss the azaleas on the Spanish Steps) and the weather is ideal for long walks.
  • 🍷 Autumn (September–October): Known for the "Ottobrate Romane": warm sunny days with golden light – perfect for photos.
  • 🎄 December: Christmas markets, a beautifully lit Vatican and a very special atmosphere, though it can be chilly.

❌ Times to think twice about:

  • 🔥 August: Very hot, and many family-run restaurants close for holidays ("Chiuso per ferie"). However, traffic is lighter and the city feels calmer than usual.
  • November: Statistically one of the rainiest months. If you do not mind umbrellas, you will enjoy quieter museums.
  • ✝️ Holy Week and Jubilee years: Rome fills with pilgrims. If you are not travelling for religious reasons, expect higher prices and fully booked hotels.

💰 Prices by Season

Staying in the historic centre is rarely "cheap", but prices vary a lot throughout the year.

Season Hotels Attractions and Atmosphere
Low (Jan–Feb, Nov) €70–€120 Best for your wallet. Shorter queues at the Vatican Museums. Ideal for art lovers and travellers who enjoy a quieter city.
Mid (Mar, Aug*) €100–€180 *August is unusual: some hotels cut rates because there are fewer business travellers, even though tourists are still around.
High (Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct, Christmas/New Year) €150–€300+ Everything is in full swing. Rome is one of Europe’s favourite destinations at these times, so book well in advance. 💸

Note: The local tourist tax (tassa di soggiorno) is paid separately, usually in cash at the hotel (often around €6–€7.50 per person per night).

🎉 Key Events in Rome

Rome lives a lot of its culture out on the streets.

  • 🐑 Holy Week / Easter (Mar/Apr): The Via Crucis around the Colosseum by torchlight is powerful, regardless of your beliefs.
  • 🎂 Natale di Roma (21 April): The city’s birthday, celebrated with historical parades featuring centurions and gladiators near the Circus Maximus.
  • 🇮🇹 Festa della Repubblica (2 June): Military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali and an air display with the Italian tricolour.
  • 🌙 Lungo il Tevere (Jun–Aug): Pop-up bars, open-air cinemas, craft stalls and live music along the Tiber.
  • 🏖️ Ferragosto (15 August): The peak of the Italian summer holiday. Rome slows down, but there are still concerts and special events.
  • 🧙‍♀️ La Befana (6 January): The "good witch" who brings sweets to children. Do not miss the traditional market in Piazza Navona.
