Getting around the city
Getting around Milan is easy thanks to its excellent public transport and plenty of shared bikes and scooters. A little planning helps you make the most of your time.
Ways to get around
Metro, buses and trams (ATM)
Milan's public transport network, run by ATM, is extensive and reliable: five metro lines, a dense bus network and the city's famous historic trams.
- Convenient: fast connections across the whole city.
- Frequent: especially at peak times.
- At night: reduced service after midnight.
- Single ticket: €2.20, valid for 90 minutes including changes. Paper tickets have been phased out: pay by contactless card or phone, or with a rechargeable RicaricaMi card.
Taxis and ride apps
Official taxis are white. You'll find them at taxi ranks, or you can book one by phone or app.
- Comfortable: ideal for direct journeys or when you have luggage.
- Cost: much more expensive than public transport.
- Apps: FREENOW and itTaxi are popular; Uber only operates premium services (Black, Van).
- Typical fares: a short ride in the centre costs about €10–20. To Linate airport, about €20–30; to Malpensa, the fixed fare is €104.
Bikes and e-scooters
Milan has embraced shared micromobility – perfect for short distances and exploring at your own pace. Everything works through apps.
- Flexible: a great way to reach neighbourhoods off the metro map.
- Rules: check where you're allowed to ride and park.
- Operators: Lime, Dott and RideMovi offer e-scooters and e-bikes; the city's BikeMi scheme is another option.
- Cost: usually an unlock fee (around €1) plus a per-minute rate (around €0.15–0.25).
Travel passes
If you'll use public transport a lot, these passes can save you money.
- ATM 24-hour ticket: €7.60 – unlimited travel on the ATM network for one day.
- ATM 3-day ticket: €13 – unlimited travel for three consecutive days.
- Milano Card: public transport plus discounts at attractions.
- 1 day: about €13
- 2 days: about €19
- 3 days: about €24
Expert tip
The easiest way to pay is to tap your contactless credit or debit card (or your phone) at the metro gates and on bus and tram validators. Use the same card every time: the system automatically caps what you pay at the price of a day ticket.
With these options, getting around Milan will be easy and stress-free.
