Safety

Tips for a worry-free trip

Milan is generally a safe city for travellers, but as in any big European city, common sense goes a long way. Most incidents involve petty theft or scams aimed at tourists.

Staying safe

Areas to watch

Some areas are less pleasant late at night. Avoid hanging around the area near Milano Centrale station after dark, and take care in the quieter, poorly lit parts of the Navigli and in large, empty parks at night.

  • Avoid: the area around Stazione Centrale late at night.
  • Take care: the Navigli late in the evening and isolated parks.

Common tourist scams

Pickpockets are the main concern, especially on public transport, in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and in Piazza del Duomo. Watch out for forced "donations" or unsolicited "gifts" (friendship bracelets, flowers) followed by a demand for money.

  • Pickpockets: metro, trams, the Duomo, the Galleria.
  • Scams: unsolicited "gifts" and petition signatures.
  • Tip: politely ignore strangers who approach you with unusual offers.

At night

Milan has a great nightlife scene. To get around safely, use official white taxis or licensed ride services, and avoid walking alone down quiet or poorly lit streets, especially outside the centre.

  • Transport: official taxis or licensed ride services.
  • Avoid: walking alone down dark streets.
  • Good habit: let someone know your plans for the night.

Emergency numbers

  • All emergencies (police, ambulance, fire): 112
  • Medical emergencies / ambulance: 118 (still works, redirected to 112)
  • Milan city police (Polizia Locale), non-urgent matters: 02 0208

Expert tip

Keep your valuables (wallet, phone) in a zipped front pocket or a cross-body bag that closes properly. Be especially alert on crowded metro trains and trams, and around the main sights.

With a little preparation and some street sense, you'll enjoy Milan's beauty and culture without any trouble.
