Where you stay in Venice makes a real difference to your trip: the atmosphere, how much you spend and how far you walk each day. The city is divided into sestieri (its historic districts), and each one has its own character. Here's which ones work best depending on what you're after, plus a mainland option if you want to save money.
The neighbourhoods at a glance
📍 San Marco
The centre of it all: the Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the city's most famous square. If your dream is to open the window and find yourself in a Venetian postcard, this is the place. But you'll pay for the privilege.
Prices: very high.

🎭 Cannaregio

🎨 Dorsoduro
The arty, university district, with a relaxed, bohemian feel. It's home to the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and at night it has a lovely atmosphere without getting packed.
Prices: mid to high.

- ❌ A bit further from San Marco (more walking or a vaporetto ride).

🚆 Mestre (on the mainland)
It's not postcard Venice, but it's the smart choice on a tight budget. It's on the mainland, the hotels are newer and much cheaper, and you can reach Venice in about 10 minutes by train or 20 by tram, with very frequent services.
Prices: low.

- ❌ You're not staying "in" Venice, so you miss its magic at night.

A tip before you book
Book well ahead, especially in high season (summer, Carnival and the Biennale): Venice fills up fast and the good deals go quickly. And remember the golden rule: the closer to San Marco, the more you pay. Staying a little further out (Cannaregio, Dorsoduro or Mestre) often gets you a better hotel for the same money.
