Arriving in Venice is the start of an unforgettable trip – and few cities have an entrance quite like it, with history, beauty and canals from the moment you arrive.
Getting from the airport to the city
Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is the main gateway to Venice. These are the best ways to get to the historic centre.
Bus
Cheap and frequent, it takes you to Piazzale Roma, the last point in Venice you can reach by road.
- Companies: ATVO (direct express) or ACTV line 5 Aerobus (with stops).
- Journey time: about 20 minutes with ATVO and 25–35 minutes with line 5.
- Price: €10 one way, €18 return.
- Bear in mind: from Piazzale Roma, you'll need to walk or take a vaporetto to your accommodation.
Alilaguna water bus
A scenic boat ride from the airport jetty straight to several key stops in central Venice.
- Routes: the Blue, Orange and Red (seasonal, April to early November) lines serve stops such as San Marco, Rialto and Fondamente Nove.
- Journey time: 45–90 minutes, depending on your stop.
- Price: €18 one way to Venice and €10 to Murano, including one large suitcase and one piece of hand luggage.
- Bear in mind: it's slower than the bus, but it drops you much closer to your final destination.
Taxi
A quick, comfortable option to Piazzale Roma if time matters or you have bulky luggage.
- Journey time: 15–20 minutes.
- Price: around €40–50.
- Bear in mind: it can't go into the historic centre, and it costs much more than the bus.
Private water taxi
The most exclusive and direct option – it can drop you at your hotel's door if it has water access.
- Journey time: 25–40 minutes.
- Price: from about €120–150 per boat, depending on your destination and luggage.
- Bear in mind: it's the most expensive option, best for special occasions or groups splitting the cost.

Buy ahead: book your transfer tickets online to skip the queues at the airport.

Plan the last stretch: check where your hotel is and which vaporetto stop is closest, so you don't drag your suitcase over too many bridges.
