Introduction
Venice is a place best enjoyed by getting lost: alleyways, bridges and canals that feel like they belong to another century. Here are the must-sees, with up-to-date prices and booking tips, so you arrive prepared and with no nasty surprises at the ticket office.
Top sights
St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco)
Venice's grand open-air drawing room, framed by the Basilica and the Campanile. It's the heart of the city and where every visit begins.

- 💡 Tip: go early in the morning or at sunset to enjoy it without the crowds. Don't feed the pigeons (you can be fined) and beware of the cafés on the square, which charge an arm and a leg.
St Mark's Basilica
A Byzantine gem with over 8,000 m² of golden mosaics that seem to glow when the light catches them. Look up: the magic is in the domes.
- 💶 Price: it's no longer free. Basic entry costs €10; €20 if you add either the Pala d'Oro or the museum and the Loggia dei Cavalli (the terrace with the horses), and €30 for everything.

Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale)
Home of the Doges and the seat of power of the Most Serene Republic. You'll walk through vast, lavish halls and cross the famous Bridge of Sighs from the inside.
- 💶 Price: €35 for adults, or €30 if you book online at least 30 days ahead (includes the Museo Correr, the National Archaeological Museum and the rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana).

- 🎟️ Booking: online with a time slot; also included in the Venezia Unica city pass.
- 💡 Tip: if you love history, the "Secret Itineraries" tour is the best part of the palace.
Gondola ride
The classic Venetian experience. Expensive, yes, but along the smaller canals at sunset it's pure magic.
- 💶 Price: the official rate is €90 by day and €110 after 7pm per gondola (up to 5 people) for 30 minutes, usually paid in cash. Agree the price and duration before you get in. Shared rides start at around €30–40 per person.
- 🕒 Time: 30 min.
- 💡 Tip: set off away from Rialto and San Marco to avoid the gondola traffic jams.
Rialto Bridge
The most famous bridge on the Grand Canal, with spectacular views in both directions. Right next to it is the lively Rialto Market.

- 🕒 Time: 15–20 min (longer if you explore the market).
- 💡 Tip: the fish market opens early in the morning and is closed on Sundays and Mondays – go early to see it in full swing.
Murano and Burano
Hop on a vaporetto: Murano is famous for its glass-blowing and Burano for its brightly coloured houses and handmade lace. Perfect for a half-day or full-day trip.
- 💶 Price: the islands are free; what you pay for is the vaporetto. A single ticket costs €9.50 (valid for 75 minutes), so a pass almost always works out cheaper (1 day €25, 2 days €35, 3 days €45).

- 💡 Tip: if you have time, add Torcello to the trip.
Hidden gems
Libreria Acqua Alta
A gloriously chaotic bookshop where books are kept in gondolas and bathtubs to protect them from the acqua alta. At the back, there's a staircase made of books with a view over the canal.

- 🕒 Time: 20–30 min.
- 💡 Tip: go first thing in the morning – it's small and fills up fast.
Cannaregio and the Jewish Ghetto
The world's first ghetto (1516), now a quiet, very local neighbourhood with synagogues and a charm all of its own. One of the best places to escape the crowds.
- 💶 Price: wandering around is free; the Jewish Museum and the synagogues are a separate visit.
- 🕒 Time: 1–2 h.
- 💡 Tip: combine it with a cicchetti crawl along the Fondamenta della Misericordia.
Cicchetti in the bacari
The most authentic (and cheapest) way to eat in Venice: small bites, often on bread, in traditional wine bars, washed down with an ombra (a small glass of wine).
- 💶 Price: cicchetti from €1.50 to €4 each, and an ombra from €1 to €3.
- 🕒 Time: as long as the ombre keep coming.
- 💡 Tip: the best areas are around the Rialto Market, Cannaregio and Campo Santa Margherita.
Our tip
Book ahead. The Doge's Palace and the Basilica use timed entry and sell out in high season. If you're planning to visit several sights, take a look at the official Venezia Unica San Marco City Pass: from €43.90 for adults and €23.90 for 6–29-year-olds, it includes the Doge's Palace and the St Mark's Square museums, three churches of your choice and the Fondazione Querini Stampalia. Two things to note: vaporetti aren't included (they're an optional extra), and nor is any part of the Basilica. And if you're coming just for the day on a busy date, remember the city's access fee may apply – that's a separate process.
