Venice is one of those places where it's best to get lost: alleyways, bridges, and canals that seem from another century. Here are the must-sees, with up-to-date prices and booking info so you arrive with your homework done and without surprises at the ticket office.
Top Attractions
St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco)
Venice's grand open-air living room, surrounded by the Basilica and the Campanile. It's the heart of the city and where everything begins.

- 💡 Tip: go early or at sunset to see it without the tide of people. Don't feed the pigeons (there's a fine) and watch out for the cafes in the square, which charge an arm and a leg.
St. Mark's Basilica
A Byzantine jewel with over 8,000 m² of golden mosaics that seem to burn when the light hits them. Look up: the magic is in the domes.

Rialto Bridge
The most famous bridge over the Grand Canal, with spectacular views on both sides. Right next to it you have the bustling Rialto market.

- 💡 Tip: the fish market opens early in the morning and closes Sundays and Mondays; go early to see it in full swing.
Islands of Murano and Burano
Escape by vaporetto: Murano for its blown glass and Burano for its colorful houses and artisanal lace. Perfect for half a day or a full day.
- 💶 Price: the islands are free; the expense is the vaporetto. A single ticket costs €9.50 (75 min), so a pass almost always pays off (1 day €25, 2 days €35, 3 days €45).

Libreria Acqua Alta
A deliciously chaotic bookstore where books are kept in gondolas and bathtubs to save them from the acqua alta. At the back, a staircase made of books overlooking the canal.

- 💡 Tip: go first thing in the morning, it's small and fills up quickly.
Cannaregio and the Jewish Ghetto
The first ghetto in the world (1516), today a quiet and very local neighborhood, with synagogues and a distinct charm. It's one of the best areas to get away from the hustle and bustle.
- 💶 Price: walking is free; the Jewish Museum and synagogues are a separate visit.
- 🕒 Time: 1-2 h.
- 💡 Tip: fits perfectly for a cicchetti route along the Fondamenta della Misericordia.
Cicchetti in Bacari
The most authentic (and cheapest) way to eat in Venice: small bites on bread at traditional bars, washed down with an ombra (a little wine).
- 💶 Price: cicchetti from €1.50 to €4 each, the ombra from €1 to €3.
- 🕒 Time: as long as the vermouth lasts.
- 💡 Tip: the best areas are around the Rialto market, Cannaregio, and Campo Santa Margherita.
Expert Tip
Book in advance. The Doge's Palace and the Basilica operate with timeslots and sell out in high season. If you are going to see several museums, look at the Venezia Unica City Pass (the official card): it's around €52.90 for adults and €31.90 for youth aged 6 to 29, includes the Doge's Palace and the civic museums with skip-the-line access, and saves you up to 30%. Two warnings: vaporetto transport is separate (it's an optional module) and the paid areas of the Basilica are not included in the pass. And if you come only for the day in high season, keep in mind that the city access fee might apply to you, which is a different process.
